Flight of the month went to Adam West for first attempt at the Rondebossie XC challenge (going XC from our training hill). All flights greater than 10km count towards this challenge. Adam managed to sneak in a 10.9km flight in strong SE winds.

From Adam:
The wind was blowing +40kmh on the hill, but cumulus were popping off to the SW. Thought there might be a chance of catching a ride under one and going XC.

It was really fun to go over the back, drifting over the fields. It was hard to stay ou...

Flight of the Month went to Mark and Fabiano for pioneering a site in Franschoek:

Mark's story:
Today was one of those amazing days I'll never forget. Fabiano and I pioneered a site. Well, more Fabio. He found the spot, checked it out, found the landing and decided to go fly it. I just got him to send me off first so I had a wireman. Flying the site was awesome. The sun had vanished behind the clouds, but we still managed to climb up 2975' AMSL. We chased each other around the ...

December 2012

Flight of the month for December went to new pilot, Arjan de Kock, for his first XC flight at Dasklip. A really special moment for any soaring pilot. Well done!

Arjan's story:
It’s Saturday afternoon and I’m at a climbing competition in Cape Town. This is supposed to be my element but I look around the plastic walls and people that came here to compete. I feel completely un-inspired... its hot... climbing walls is a futile pursuit & I’m drained from driving countless hours from Namibia......

Flight of the month goes to Grove Steyn for an exciting and innovative flight from SLP.

http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/702245

From Grove:

I see that I only managed to launch from the lower take-off at 15h00 after Paul and I had sent off Mark.  The prevailing wind was SW, but the thermals still pulled the streamers up straight regularly.   I had to work a bit to get up above the bridge section of the road.  Thereafter I hung around at ridge height working the moderate thermals wh...

Flight of the month goes to Paul Laros for a fantastic, late-afternoon flight to Sneeuberg in Sir Lowry's Pass valley.

From Paul:
I had a wonderful flight at SLP this afternoon. Earlier I had to choose between watching the Bokke against the All Blacks or an afternoon flight. [The Bokke got spanked - Ed.] I am glad that I chose to fly.

I took off at the lower take-off at about 5 pm. The wind was W, but fairly cross on take-off due to the sea breeze affect. I had to wait for a straight cycle but...

Some excellent XC flights again in January, with big altitude gains and long flights, including a crossing of the Pakhuis Pass (last done in 2009, and previously 20 years before that).

Flight of the Month went to Steve Pelley for his first thermal flight (a big moment for any soaring pilot). This was an exceptional feat considering it was effectively a low save on a small hill (i.e. very, very tricky). Well done Steve!

From Steve:
"I headed out to the hill hoping to catch a decent post-fronta...

Flight of the month goes to Adam West for an out-and-return flight from Signal Hill to the along the Apostles and back.

"A perfect Signals flight. Challenging to get around the face of Lion's Head, and once up, abundant and smooth lift. Racing under the clouds to the end of the Apostles and back and then meeting up with Eric on the Lion's Head crossing and doing it all again. A sunset landing and a cold beer in Mouille Point topped off a great flight."

Stefan on the ramp at Dasklip

Stefan's story:

Flight(s) of the month went to Ross Hofmeyer for some excellent winter flying at Rondebossie. Although a new HG pilot, Ross has been showing excellent command of a range of skills from light wind launches and spot landings to high wind flights and top landings. Great stuff Ross.

Ross' story:

So after a quite a few Rondebossie trips, and two weekends of no flying at Porterville, I was pretty fired up to fly my hang glider there.  The long range forecast looked really good the whole week, which helped build excitement, and it turned out accurate. So Saturday dawned and it looked fantastic. 103 pil...

This months Flight of the Month goes to Greg Gibson for a nice Rondebossie session.

 Greg's story:
I arrived at Rondebossie at around 3.30 on Saturday afternoon. The wind was perfect, quite smooth at around 25kmh. I rigged as fast as I could and took off at about 4.00. I played around the hill for about half an hour and was really thirsty so top landed, had a quick drink and took off immediatly. This time I was up for about 1 hour. There was consistent lift with very tight but strong bands o...

This month saw the reopening of one of our favorite old sites, Rondebossie. While there was some flying at Signals, most of the flying happened at Rondebossie, with several new pilots dusting off the cobwebs and getting some airtime. One of these was Ross, who had his first HG flight in over a year. It is great to welcome Ross back into the fold and look forward to more flying from him. Eric's description of the flight:

I was up on Signals yesterday from about 2 pm, and it looked good, if slightly stronger and gustier than I would have liked to deal with on my own, especially with a new glider -- only the second flight with the U2.  So I sat and waited to see if the wind might drop a little, which it did. Eventually I rigged, a...

We had some really good flights this month, with several in the +80 km range and one of 131km. Adam showed tracklogs and pictures from the December Dasklip trip, including flights from Porterville to Klawer and to Bree Rivier. Eric described his exciting flight over Pakhuis. Really cool, ground-breaking stuff. This led to a good discussion about how to go over the back of mountains efficiently. There was some flying at Wilderness and Sir Lowry’s too.

A nice diversity of flights this month from Cape Town and beyond. Eric relayed his stories from Bulwer where he got a couple of flights. Adam had a 71km flight from Dasklip to just short of Clanwilliam. But Flight of the Month went to Greg Gibson for his return to the air at the Map in Wilderness. Greg has been patient and has persevered in getting back in the air and it is great to see this commitment. Well done!

A bunch of us hangies joined in on the paragliding community's friendly pre-season comp, Gatskop, at Porterville. After a poor flight on Saturday, I had a nice flight on Sunday. I had a good launch, but for some reason, after 300 flights in my harness, I grabbed my drogue chute pocket (where I keep my energy bar) by mistake instead of my ...

Flight of the month for October went to Adam for his ridge run from Signals to Scarborough. The story:

32 kms from Signals to Scarborough. A really fun flight and a new personal best for me at this site. The flight itself was easy, just a point and shoot ridge-run. The only tricky bit came navigating some cloud in Hout Bay and thus having to go deep downwind along the steep cliffs of Chapman's Peak over the ocean before finding lift. The glide from Chapman's to Scarborough was a buttery smoot...
